Welcome to the American Southdown Breeders Association

Southdowns are excelling as terminal sires in commercial production flocks, receiving the final handshake in Supreme Champion drives all over the country and are the first choice of many youth, families and sheep producers. Check out this website to see what all of the excitement is about! Most of all, let us know how we can help YOU explore the Southdown breed!

April 11, 2012

Recently, the Association was informed by Dr. Jonathan Beever of the University of Illinois, that his lab would be doing testing of blood samples for those who wished to check for the hairy lamb gene.

The test is much like any other blood sample that many of you have taken from your sheep and chose to send to a laboratory.  A purple top tube is needed, with 2-3 ml of blood drawn. The tube should be clearly labeled and all pertinent contact information as to where to send results should be included.  Cost of each blood sample is $8.00 and payable to the University of Illinois.

As a breeder of purebred Southdowns, the Association wanted to make you aware of this opportunity.  There is no mandatory testing for this particular defect at this time.  However, this is information that you may wish to have as a breeder.

The address you should use to send the blood samples is:

John Nixon, Hilmar Farms Southdowns

After a 23 year hiatus, an appreciation for an efficient and easy to work with breed of sheep drew John Nixon back to the Southdown breed he knew and loved. John grew up with the breed; his sister started a Southdown flock as a 4-H project in1952 and he showed them as a 4-H member as Southdowns were the sheep of choice for the Nixon family. read more>>
